Plymouth Parks Dept. Helps PHS Gym Class

Plymouth Park’s Dept. Serves up An Alternative Option for PHS Gym Class while Tennis Courts are Down

Every school day, Plymouth High School physical education teacher John Mills teaches nine eager students enrolled in his fifth hour alternative physical education class. Mills said, “My fifth hour class is best described as a gym class for students, who for whatever reason are unable to meet the adversity of a traditional PE class”.

Mills said every spring when the winter weather clears his fifth hour gym class utilizes the city’s tennis courts. Unfortunately, this spring due to the tennis counts being under construction, his usual game plan was not an option. “I decided to reached out to the Plymouth Park and Recreation Department to see if they would allow my gym class to use their shuffleboard courts and equipment and they said yes. So starting in April on days when the weather cooperated, my class and I walked a few blocks from the high school to shuffleboard courts.”

Mills would like to thank Michael Hite, the Park and Recreation Department Superintendent, and his staff for allowing PHS students the use of the shuffleboard courts this spring. “We appreciated the Park Department saw our need and allowed us this wonderful alternative. I had a great time teaching my students how to play. They enjoyed playing the game so much that it will likely be an activity many of them will be able to enjoy for a lifetime,” said Mills.
