PHS Science Students Viewing Eclipse on Monday

Solar Eclipse

On August 21, during sixth through eighth periods, (1:00 p.m. to the end of the school day, 3:15 p.m.) Plymouth High School science teacher Lori McClellan and her students will put on special solar glasses to view the solar eclipse. Students will be illustrating what they see and documenting the temperature and weather. McClellan has created a website to educate her students about the 2017 solar eclipse. Anyone can visit the website to check it out at http://2017SolarEclipsePCSC.weebly.com. An eclipse is a rare and striking phenomenon we do not want our students to miss, but all students must carefully follow safety procedures while witnessing this spectacle! All students who are taking part in viewing the eclipse must wear special solar glasses that are compliant with the ISO 12312-2 safety standard. PHS will be providing these special glasses to the students upon return of a signed parent permission form. Roughly 30 students per period are in McClellan’s science period, students who are in study hall and in the learning center during the last three periods of the day are invited as well. McClellan’s students will be drawing what we see, checking and documenting the temperature, and viewing the changes around us such as animals, noise, etc. to see if there are any changes. Prior to the 21st McClellan’s classes will be discussing what an eclipse is, how the sun, moon, and Earth are lined up, why we do not have one all the time and other pertinent information. On Thursday, they will be drawing the two types of eclipses on white boards. On Friday, they will be discussing expectations and safety when viewing an eclipse. Students will be sharing in writing what they thought about the experience after Monday’s eclipse. All students who are planning on viewing the solar eclipse on Monday, must attend mandatory training tomorrow during SRT at 10:30 to 11 a.m. Students who do not attend on Friday will not be able to participate on Monday.
