Robotics Club with Officer Bob DeLee
The Jefferson Robotics Club is teaching Jefferson Jets much more than robotics. Each season, VEX picks one STEM subject for each team to focus on. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics. This year, the STEM Research Project focuses on robotic engineering and ethics. Jefferson teams chose to research drones. Students interviewed Survey Manager, Mike Rozycki, with Abonmarche Consultants, to see how the engineering of a drone helps assist in his job. They learned that a drone can be used to perform dangerous tasks like inspecting the tops of water towers and tall buildings! They also interviewed Bob DeLee from the Plymouth Police Department to see how a drone could be used to assist in saving lives or how they could help keep our police officers safe. Jefferson Robotics Club chair Jennifer Shidler said students enjoyed meeting both Rozycki and DeLee and learned a lot about drones.
The Jets practice every Tuesday and Friday from 2:30-4:00 p.m. Currently, the Jefferson Robotics Club is made up of nine students who make up two teams. This is the third year that Toolmasters, Inc. in Mishawaka has sponsored the Jefferson Robotics Club. Shidler, said with their sponsorship she is able to pay for competition entry fees so the Jets and compete and buy t-shirts for the team.
