Josh Martin Named Plymouth High School Assistant Principal

The new assistant principal at Plymouth High School won’t have to learn his way around the school, as he is quite familiar with the layout considering he has taught at the school for well over a decade. On Thursday, July 5, the Plymouth Community School Corporation school board approved the promotion of Josh Martin as an assistant principal at Plymouth High School.

Martin has worked as an English teacher at Plymouth High School since August of 2004; this August will mark his 15th school year at Plymouth schools. His history at PHS goes back a lot further though, he attended Plymouth schools for his education and graduated from PHS in 1991.

"Mr. Martin has been a true leader here at Plymouth High School, he embodies all of the attributes that we seek as a member of our PHS administration team. We believe his exceptional skills will transition well into the assistant principal role. I am confident that Mr. Martin’s commitment to student learning will have a positive impact on our school, students, and staff,” said PHS Principal Jim Condon.

During the June PCSC school board meeting, Martin’s predecessor, Kyle Coffman, was promoted to principal at Riverside Intermediate School. Coffman replaces Jeni Hirschy, who retired last month after serving as the Riverside Intermediate School principal since 2012.

Martin graduated from Indiana University Bloomington with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and he received a Secondary Education Graduate Certification in English from IU South Bend. He also holds a Master of Arts in Educational Administration from Ball State University.

Outside the classroom, Martin has been active as the Plymouth High School boys soccer head coach since the 2007-08 school year; prior he held assistant coaching positions from 1998-02 and 2005-07. Martin has been a member of the PHS School Improvement Council from 2016-18, a lead teacher from 2014-17 and the PHS Department Chair of the English Department since 2013. Since 2004 Martin has enjoyed being the tenth-grade class sponsor, during the 2004-05 school year he was the sponsor of the Intramural Basketball program and for the past six school years, he was also the online Creative Writing Teacher at Plymouth High School.

Throughout his time in the classroom, Martin said his biggest accomplishment has been teaching the Advanced College Project dual-credit courses at PHS offered through Indiana University Bloomington. “A lot of my previous students have let me know how well prepared they were for college after they took those intellectually rigorous courses,” said Martin.

As for his most memorable moment in education he said, “It was being named National Honor Society Teacher of Excellence for the year in 2009. An award like that is voted on by students, so you know that they appreciate the work you are doing.”

Martin and his wife Stefanie, a PHS grad, have two children, Delaney, 6, and Elodie, 2.

“My wife Stefanie is a PHS grad as well and is super excited to start this new journey. She and the girls have always supported me. I would have never made it through all my licensing work without them. My daughter Delaney has already told me that being a principal is “amazing” because she was Principal for a Day over at Jefferson Elementary.”

Martin said he will miss the student-teacher classroom communication. “The variety of interesting conversations that the classroom can sometimes generate… some personal, some intellectual, some goofy.” However, he said he is honored to be selected as the next assistant principal and looks forward to his new role of working closely with the students, teachers, and parents.

Martin will immediately begin his role as an assistant principal at Plymouth High School.
