Message from the Superintendent

Dear Families,

As we close the book on the 21-22 school year and look towards next year, I wanted to take this opportunity to share a new initiative we are working towards.  PCSC has won a grant with the help of our partner Equitable Education Solutions to certify each of our elementary schools as STEM schools.  This will give all students in our elementaries the opportunity to learn through a problem-based inquiry approach rather than just a select few.

STEM will not replace the way students receive instruction in math and reading, those will still be a separate part of the day.  In fact, this past year a new math curriculum was adopted for the coming school year, and we have used the Benchmark Reading series in the elementary for the last two years.  We are excited to have students learn to explore, problem solve, and grow their ability to think through problems using this STEM approach.  We will begin in the fall working with our teachers and anticipate full implementation by the fall of 2023.

As we work to make the opportunities at each school similar, I also want to announce it will no longer be a requirement to have a special dress code at Washington Discovery Academy.  The dress code at WDA does not fit the model moving forward, and it creates an unequal system leaving many students on the outside.  Instead, we want every student to have an opportunity for greatness.

Our goal is to eventually grow the number of students who want to continue a Problem Based Learning experience as they move into Lincoln Jr. High and the Weidner School of Inquiry at the high school level.  As always, I thank you for your continued support of Plymouth Community School Corporation.

Sincerely,

Mitchell D. Mawhorter

Queridas familias,

Sinceramente,

Mitchell D. Mawhorter
