Both Plymouth High School and Bremen High School tennis teams invite the community to their annual Smash Cancer Tennis Match tonight, Wednesday, Sept. 5, at Mary Beth Hunter Tennis Courts in Centennial Park in Plymouth.

There will be a short presentation around 4:30 p.m., prior to the start of the match that is expected to start close to 5 p.m., discussing the importance of why the match was started, and to bring awareness to many forms of cancer. Close to 18 local businesses are proud sponsors for the match.

This year's match will honor two Michiana individuals; longtime Bremen tennis coach Mark Wagner lost his battle with pancreatic cancer last February and Plymouth native Jennifer Beatty who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Beatty is the mother of Mary Beatty, the PHS team manager for Plymouth High School’s tennis team. The Bremen boys tennis team will play in purple Smash Cancer Tennis shirts, the color purple represents pancreatic cancer awareness. The Plymouth boys tennis team will be wearing the color pink that is identify cancer awareness for breast cancer.

Both PHS Coach Brad Haeck and BHS Coach Kevin Hickman, look forward to a great night of tennis, raising cancer awareness, and they hope to see you at tonight’s match.

Ounce of Prevention, a local organization whose focus is to increase breast cancer awareness and support through fundraising and events, will be on hand selling cancer awareness t-shirts. Proceeds raised will be given to the Plymouth and Bremen tennis teams for their Smash Cancer Tennis Match annual donation to the local Marshall County chapter of the American Cancer Society.
