Sometimes it’s just the athletes...

A local athlete continuing his or her career with a scholarship to an NCAA Division I school is a rare and special honor. This year’s class of 2020 in Marshall County will have no less than four that have committed to Division 1 schools for the coming fall.

Everybody’s All-American Erin Coffel from Bremen will continue her softball career at SEC power Tennesee in the coming school year. Coffel has a career .627 batting average, 50 home runs and 164 RBIS in 88 high school games.

She has a chance to lead her team to a third state title game in softball this coming season. By the way, she also joined the 1,000-point club this year for Lady Lions basketball team.

Trey Galloway is hoping to recover early in the new year from a wrist injury, but will attend Indiana University in the fall to join Archie Miller’s Hoosiers.

As a four year starter at CMA, Galloway has averaged 15 points and five rebounds a game and been a crucial component in the Eagles’ success for the past three years — including two runs to the state title game.

His teammate, Deontae Craig, was a four-year starter for the Eagles football program and a four-star recruit at the defensive end position.

Craig had multiple offers, including joining his friend Galloway at IU, but chose the Big Ten’s University of Iowa to continue his football career.

He too joined the 1,000-point club for Eagles basketball as well, early this season.

Several other county athletes have hit milestones in their careers and plan to continue playing a sport in college. Congratulations to you all!
