PHS Students at IUPUI Mobile App Challenge

On Saturday, November 4th, eight students traveled to the IUPUI Mobile App Challenge in Indianapolis to represent Plymouth High School Computer Science. When we arrived, we discovered that we would be competing against approximately 50 other high school students. Each year, the challenge begins with a design brief, during which the IUPUI faculty announces what task the app should accomplish. This year, the students were designing an app that would help a team of paranormal investigators. Students were given 7 hours to plan and design their user interface and program their app before presenting it to a team of judges. The students completed their design without outside assistance. The apps were judged on completeness, user interface, visual design, and technical fluency.

After the judges deliberated, we were very pleased to discover that two of our teams placed. Andrew Fornash (senior), Max Duncan (junior), and Brandon Hudson (senior) challenged themselves to program their app in a more complex environment and ran short on time for designing the user interface. Kobe Johnson (junior) and Isabel Nuñez (senior) won third place for their work on their app, Apparition. They presented their user interface and were rewarded for the creativity they demonstrated when incorporating paranormal activity hunting tips. Each of them received a $50 gift card and a $1,200 scholarship to the IUPUI School of Informatics. Bridget Schafer (junior), Samuel Carroll (senior), and Borias Miller (senior) won second place for the user interface and visual design of their app, Inquiry. Each of them received a $100 gift card and a $1,600 scholarship to the IUPUI School of Informatics. If you see any of these students, please congratulate them for dedication and professionalism they demonstrated on Saturday.
