Menominee Elementary School Health Fair - Thursday, May 4, 2017

The ninth Plymouth Community School Corporation Health Fair will be held at Menominee Elementary School on Thursday, May 4, 2017 from 8:30 a.m. to noon and 12:30 p.m. to 2:50 p.m.  This is the fourth year the Health Fair will be held at Menominee; previously it was hosted by Washington Elementary School, now known as Washington Discovery Academy.

Menominee families are encouraged to stop by, but please note, students only have five minutes per group to present their topics, and will not be able to mingle with the guests.
North Central Area Vocational Cooperative Health Careers Students will be presenting the following health-related topics, in a fun hands-on kid friendly way!

  • Health Jeopardy
  • Wheelchair Races
  • First Aid/Safety
  • Dental Hygiene
  • Anti-Bullying
  • Poison Control
  • Car Accident Prevention
  • Exercise and Wellness
  • Healthy Eating
  • Hand Washing
  • Personal Hygiene
  • What to do in an Emergency?

Meanwhile outside, weather permitting, the Plymouth Fire Department will be teaching students about fire safety. They plan to have a fire truck on hand for students to learn about and explore. A team of Health Careers Students will present how to react in case of fire emergencies; stop, drop, and roll.  A fun and revamped playground safety obstacle course will be set up for students to enjoy.

The Health Fair schedule is as follows:

  • 8:30 a.m.-9:40 a.m. – 4th grade
  • 9:40 a.m.-10:50 a.m. – 3rd grade
  • 10:50 a.m.-12:00 p.m. – 2nd grade
  • 12:30 p.m.-1:40 p.m. – Kindergarten
  • 1:40 p.m.-2:50 p.m. – 1st grade

Physical Education Teacher, Michael Kershner, and Health Careers Instructor, Jona Cartwright, B.S.N., R.N, plan the event each year.  “I take care of everything on the side of getting the gymnasium set up, scheduling everything, logistics, etc.,” said Kershner.

Cartwright and her students handle the content. “This is their final Health Careers project. It is a large part of their grade, so they have to be prepared as they are teaching elementary children about their health.  This is a great way for my high school students to put into practice what they have learned all year and they are great mentors for the elementary age students.”
