Plymouth High School Hosts Indiana Academic Spell Bowl Junior And Senior Divisions for Michiana Schools

Approximately 6,000 students from around the state have been preparing for the 33rd annual Indiana Academic Spell Bowl, which will take place at 18 sites around the state for grades 9-12 on Monday evening, October 30.

Plymouth High School is proud to be one of the 18 host sites. There will be plenty of spectator seating available in the varsity gym where the event will take place promptly at 6 p.m. Area Spell Bowl teams from the following Michiana high schools will be present to compete: Mishawaka, Penn, John Glenn, New Prairie, Bremen, Rochester, and Plymouth.

Senior division teams of 10 students each and junior division teams of eight students each will compete. In addition to the over 6,000 competing team members, there were several thousand additional students who tried out but did not make the “starting” team.

The Indiana Academic Spell Bowl is a team concept with no individual winners. Each round consists of one team member writing the correct spelling of nine words while competing against one team member from each other school. Students are seated on the gym floor or auditorium stage. Each word is graded immediately and an individual scoring chart maintains a running team score as the evening progresses. While students are waiting to compete, they sit in a cheer block to cheer for their teammates.

The top teams with the highest scores in each of the four enrollment classifications will converge on the Purdue University campus (both Senior and Junior divisions) on Saturday, November 11, 2017, for the state championship competition.

The competition is administered by the Indiana Association of School Principals, Department of Student Programs, and sponsored by Purdue University. To find out more about the particulars of this statewide spell bowl competition, contact Dept. of Student Programs in Indianapolis at (317) 891-9900.
