Dear Parent,
As you may know, in March of 2010 the Indiana General Assembly passed Public Law 109 requiring the evaluation of reading skills for all third grade students. This legislation was developed to ensure students can read at grade level prior to fourth grade. As many researchers and educators have noted, from Kindergarten through grade three, students are primarily “learning to read.” But beginning in fourth grade, students must be able to “read to learn.” Standards and materials only get more complex from fourth grade forward, and students who cannot read proficiently will struggle to keep up with their peers. In response to this legislation, your child will take the Indiana Reading Evaluation And Determination (IREAD-3) Assessment during the spring of the their third grade year.
To help ensure that your child is making sufficient progress in reading this year, we encourage you to contact your child’s teacher to learn more about his/her reading progress and to gain a better understanding of your child’s reading program.
Best wishes to you and your child for a successful school year!

Thanks to the Penny War, Jefferson students collected nearly $370 for the United Way of Marshall County. Shown here, Chad Dreibelbis, 2011 campaign chair, receives a check from Angela Mills, principal. Also shown are members of the third grade and Red Ribbon Week winners. The third grade took the crown this year by brining in the most pennies and winning the penny war, a competition to raise funds for the community support organization.

Studies show that children learn about science by DOING! And, at Jefferson, we're all about that! Thanks to the Plymouth Fire Department, many parent volunteers and Mrs. Chaney, Ms. Gray and Mrs. Rooney, our 2011 pumpkin drop was a great lesson in gravity (a smashing success, we might say.) Students packed their pumpkins with whatever they thought might prevent it from breaking in a four-story drop. How many survived? JUST ONE! What a fun mess. Sometimes being the little school in the park has it's advantages, eh Jets?

Mrs. Griewank, Mr. McCan, Mrs. Stone and Mrs. Vandemark from the Plymouth Lions Club came to Jefferson and handed out free dictionaries to the third grade! Wow! Thanks Lions! Now we can get on with our hippopotomonstrosesquipedalianism.

The world is changing and knowing how to type is a critical part of being successful in any workplace. What's more, it will help your children in school as on-line standardized testing becomes commonplace. We at Jefferson want your kids to be as computer literate as possible so we've purchased a fun program to teach them. Go to Learning.com and let your student log into the formal keyboarding program used at school for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade
A keyboarding link is also housed on the student page here and gives a list of keyboarding practice sites students can use at home.
