Fun Fair from 5-7 p.m. Tonight at Jefferson05/18/2012 We can hardly wait! There'll be games and prizes, a dunk tank (Mr. Scheetz and Mr. Ringenberg!), bouncy house and bouncy slide, raffle baskets from your teachers and MORE MORE MORE! Tickets will be four for $1 at the fair and you can get pizza, a hot dog, cotton candy or a Sno Cone for four tickets! (Plus there is a super deal -- chips, drink and entree for just seven tickets!) Come celebrate the end of the school year and support Jefferson! Bring your friends! All week, Mrs. Woods' second grade has been learning about force -- pushing, pulling, magnetic, gravity and friction. Friday they build challenges using each of these forces and learned how they work. Mr. Scheetz' second grade class learned about buoyancy Wednesday by creating clay boats and seeing if they could float in a pail of water. "I learned that it doesn't work every time," said Jade Montano. "It needs to be thin and the walls need to be high." Thanks to Mrs. Woods' second-grade student Madison, Nina and Ana Jorge, 6, visited the class Friday, Feb. 17, to teach the class about their homeland, Brazil. Nina's real name is Bruna, but everyone in the United States calls her Nina. She was an exchange student at Oregon Davis in high school. Nina shared, "I was an exchange student years ago, and I was hosted by Maddie's mother's family. I graduated in 1993 and am now coordinator at a bilingual school in Brazil." While visiting, she shared with Mrs. Woods' class a program called Mocking Bird, in which Brazilian students send e-mail messages to the states and American students send messages back. Mrs. Woods's class will participate in this program this year and are excited to learn more from other students. Principal Mills said, "When students are engaged in asking peers questions about new experiences their learning is enhanced. We are excited to share our love of learning with the bilingual Brazilian children. It's a great opportunity for Jefferson to use technology such as Skype on Mac computers to talk to children so far away but still using the exact same computers and programs." Real Soldier, Dad Visits Classroom12/09/2011 Ashton Robertson's dad, Specialist Ralph Robertson, visited Mrs. Spasic's second-grade classroom Dec. 8 to talk about his upcoming deployment to Afghanistan Jan. 3. Specialist Robertson will be gone for a whole year with the U.S. Army and explained the geography and politics to the class, which plans to stay in touch in the coming year via Skype. Second Grade's Play11/23/2011 The Second Grade put on a play. If you would like to watch it, you can click this Play Link. Disclaimer: It is a pretty large file, so it may take some time to open. Look at how happy these Jefferson Jets second-graders are! They built their own robots out of found items -- call it creativity, up-cycling or thinking WITH the box! These students did a wonderful job building a robot with their families at home and then sharing them at school while explaining their inventions. It was all part of the story of the week, Pearl and Wagner, Two Good Friends. Thanks Mrs. Spasic, Mrs. Woods and Mr. Scheetz. It only takes a few minutes to read a book to your child's class. Contact your student's teacher (email is best; addresses here) to see when you can volunteer to show kids the thrill of a great book. Shown here is a parent and her daughter in Mrs. Spasic's second-grade class Thursday, Oct. 5. The world is changing and knowing how to type is a critical part of being successful in any workplace. What's more, it will help your children in school as on-line standardized testing becomes commonplace. We at Jefferson want your kids to be as computer literate as possible so we've purchased a fun program to teach them. Go to Learning.com and let your student log into the formal keyboarding program used at school for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade A keyboarding link is also housed on the student page here and gives a list of keyboarding practice sites students can use at home. |
