It breaks our hearts when students we've worked hard with all school year long come back in August with reading scores lower than when they left. YOU CAN HELP! If you read a story with or to your child just a few times a week -- even for just five or 10 minutes -- it really makes a difference. REALLY!Please help our Jets prevent summer brain drain and keep their reading fluency sharp. You already know reading is what begets ALL learning. Below are few reading lists to give you ideas -- remember the Plymouth Public Library is FREE and open Monday - Thursday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday - Saturday 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. It may even make for a good bike ride from your house. They have a summer reading program there with prizes, too! (See the attachments below to sign up for and learn more about the PPL's summer program.)

The City of Plymouth and Plymouth Schools are teaming up to apply for a grant to install sidewalks along Klinger Street.  As part of the Safe Routes to School application, we need your help in completing an online survey.

This survey will be open from, April 20 until Saturday, April 28th.  It is important that we do our part so that we can be considered for this grant.

Dear Parent,
As you may know, in March of 2010 the Indiana General Assembly passed Public Law 109 requiring the evaluation of reading skills for all third grade students. This legislation was developed to ensure students can read at grade level prior to fourth grade. As many researchers and educators have noted, from Kindergarten through grade three, students are primarily “learning to read.” But beginning in fourth grade, students must be able to “read to learn.” Standards and materials only get more complex from fourth grade forward, and students who cannot read proficiently will struggle to keep up with their peers. In response to this legislation, your child will take the Indiana Reading Evaluation And Determination (IREAD-3) Assessment during the spring of the their third grade year.
To help ensure that your child is making sufficient progress in reading this year, we encourage you to contact your child’s teacher to learn more about his/her reading progress and to gain a better understanding of your child’s reading program.
Best wishes to you and your child for a successful school year!

In the 2012-13 school year, Washington Elementary will become the Washington Discovery Academy -- a school with project-based learning. Starting 8 a.m. Wednesday, Jan.11, the Washington Discovery Academy will take applications. Online applications are available on the Plymouth Community School Corporation web site as well as the Washington Elementary School and the Washington Discovery Academy page. If you aren't able to apply online, paper and pencil applications are available at the four elementary schools as well as the Plymouth Administration Building. Take a hand in how your child learns. If Project Based Learning appeals to you, Washington Discovery Academy is the place for your children. This academy is a tuition-free school of choice! For more

We want to keep your child warm and safe at Jefferson. Now that we have snow, we'd like to remind families about our playground rules in cold weather:
  • Snow boots (not fashion boots) are required on snowy and wet days if children want to leave the blacktop.
  • Snowpants are also required if children want to sit down in the snow.
  • Mittens, gloves, hats, a warm winter coat that zips are also needed.
  • We go outside for recess if the windchill is 15 degrees or above.
  • Snowball throwing of any kind is not permitted due to the number of children. Please help your student understand that some things allowed at home cannot be allowed at school for safety reasons.
We understand purchasing all these items for all the students in your care each year as they grow is financially challenging for many families. In response we have a limited number of gently used, cold-weather wear in our office for children to borrow and return for recess. We also encourage families to donate their winter hand-me-downs as their children outgrow them. Also be sure to check the lost-n-found box near the recess door for any misplaced items. If you need further assistance, please contact our social worker, Wendi Bendy at wbendy@plymouth.k12.in.us or our school nurse, Barb White at bwhite@plymouth.k12.in.us.

Book Fair is going on now! You can send in money with your children, stop by before or after school, during Grandparent's Day or during your parent-teacher conference time! Lots to chose from. If we sell 1,000 actual books (erasers don't count!) Mrs. Mills will ride her motorcycle through the front drive. (Last year we sold 923.) Debit and credit cards and checks accepted. There is also a website with all the info here: http://bookfairs.scholastic.com/homepage/jeffersonjets
