We are proud to announce that Washington Elementary will become Washington Discovery Academy in the fall of 2012. The academy's project-based learning (PBL) curriculum will incorporate 21st century skills such as cooperation, communication, and collaboration. As a PBL school, students will create projects that demonstrate core subject knowledge in a hands-on approach.
Why a PBL school you might ask? Plymouth Community Schools commit to doing "whatever it takes" to teach our children. Please peruse the following link which explains in greater detail the benefits of project-based learning.
http://www.p21.org/documents/21st_century_skills_education_and_competitiveness_guide.pdfTo introduce PBL, during the 2011-2012 school year Washington students will have the opportunity to participate in two projects allowing teachers to implement lessons designed during summer training. The following are the projects that students of each grade level will participate in during the last full week of September. The projects will last approximately 3-4 weeks in length.
Kindergarten Project - Community Helpers (Social Studies)
First Grade Project - Goods and Services (Social Studies)
Second Grade Project - Animals of the Yellow River (Science)
Third Grade Project - Sound (Science)
Fourth Grade Project - Indiana History
For our third grade project, we are in need of the following materials: scrap wood, metal pipes, pvc pipes, string, wire, cord, and wood glue. If you would like to donate these materials to Washington, please send these in with your child ASAP. Thank you in advance for your donation!
Can't wait to showcase what our children are doing so tune in to this website for more information!
